WELCOME TO ALVIES

by Alvie Faulkenbery, June 08,2020
I’m Alvie Faulkenbery, Founder and El Presidente of Alvies. This is a huge day for us, because it’s the first time Alvies cowboy boots and flip-flops are available to buy all over the world. It has been a long road to get to this point (you can read the full story here). In 2014 I started designing and selling boots and flip-flops out of an Airstream in Austin. Even in those early days, I knew for sure I wanted to accomplish three things with Alvies. With the launch of our new brand, site and products today, I’m happy to say that we’re doing all three. 1. Make cowboy boots and leather flip-flops comfortable enough to be go-to footwearI created our company to convert people who thought they could never pull off cowboy boots into wearing a pair of Alvies. And not just wearing them, but wearing them all the time. As a lifelong flip-flop wearer, I wanted to make leather flops that were super comfortable and could stand up over time.A pair of broken-in cowboy boots and a pair of flops are pretty much all I wear, and I knew I could get other people on board if the boots and flops were comfortable and stylish enough. That’s why we design our boots so you don’t have to worry about break-in time, and our flops to be the most comfortable you’ve ever worn. 2. Build them to last a long time Most shoes nowadays are made to last a few years, then get tossed into a landfill. That’s a bummer for me, both as someone who respects craftsmanship and as a nature lover, traveler, surfer, and life-experiencer.We make Alvies boots to last a lifetime and then some. Many years from now you’ll be able to pass them on to someone you care about, like my grandpa did for me. And while you probably won’t be passing down our flip-flops, they’re built tougher than the average flop so you don’t have to replace them as frequently. I hope that buying a pair of Alvies means you’ll spend less on shoes over time and more on getting out there and experiencing life. 3. Give back to the Austin communityI love Austin. When I first moved to the area in 2002, I knew I’d never live anywhere else. It’s this awesomely weird mix of laid back and high tech, urban and nature, cowboy and hippie. The idea of selling cowboy boots and flip-flops together is such an Austin thing. And our new brand is in a lot of ways a tribute to the city and the spirit of Austin. So I knew I wanted Alvies to give back to that community. You can read about how we do that here. The short version: while we’re working on a bigger giving program tied to well-known Austinites, in light of the coronavirus pandemic we wanted to do something smaller and more immediate. So we’re giving a portion of each sale to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians and the Southern Smoke Foundation's Austin Relief Fund for service industry workers.

ABOUT ALVIE
Alvie is the founder of Alvies (makes sense, right?), a man obsessed with boots and flip-flops. He spent six years designing and selling them out of an Airstream. That time was like his vision quest, where he learned everything he could about traditional bootmaking and leatherworking in order to build the best boots and flip-flops on the planet. In addition to being our Presidente and chief product designer, he’s also our resident boot expert and dropper of knowledge on the blog.
